During for instance password recovery there is a need to send a break to the router.
In putty (tested with both Windows and Linux) this is done by pressing ctrl+break.

I did try CTRL+PAUSE on my GNS3 and it didn’t work.
Did you try CTRL+BREAK?
I have only tried this when connected to physical devices and not using simulators such as GNS3
